MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s cabinet officially appointed General Asad Osman Abdullahi as the country’s new police chief, succeeding General Sulub Ahmed Firin, who was removed from the position on Wednesday.
Asad, hailing from the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland, has contested against the current regional President, Saeed Abdullahi Deni, in two presidential elections, though he was defeated on both occasions.
His family has had a history of dispute with the regional President, and recently, tensions have escalated in the coastal town of Bosaso between security forces led by his brother and troops loyal to the Puntland president.
His appointment came just a week after Puntland authorities received a shipment of weapons from Ethiopia, prompting a strong reaction from the Somali government, which labeled the action a violation of its sovereignty.
