MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland on Tuesday rejected an invitation to attend a meeting called by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Caasimada Online news website reported.

Regional Minister of Information Mohamud Aydid Dirir said, in an interview with Shabelle TV, that Puntland President Saeed Abdullahi Deni will not participate in the  upcoming meeting until Somali federal leadership restores the overhauled constitution.

“If the constitution was overhauled, the term of the outgoing government of the country expired, and as such, we don’t recognize it as a government,” he added.

The meeting set to kick off in Mogadishu on April 20 will bring together members of the National Consultative Council, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, state presidents and the mayor of Mogadishu.

As outlined by Villa Somalia, the fight against Al-Shabaab and ongoing controversial changes in the constitution will be among the issues to be discussed in the conference.
