Puntland security forces seize parliament compound amid escalating election deadlock

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Heavily armed members of Puntland security forces loyal to the regional President Saeed Abdullahi Deni seized the parliament compound in Garowe town, Universal Somali TV reported on Sunday.

The move comes amid escalating election deadlock and disputes between the opposition, regional president and the speaker of parliament.

Deni, who has recently announced that authorities would not hold a universal suffrage and would rather focus on the peaceful conduct of traditional electoral model, wants members of Disputes Resolution Commission to operate in the complex despite opposition from parliament.

Opposition leaders and members of parliament earlier accused him of choosing most of the members of the committee in an attempt to sweep himself to power in an upcoming vote scheduled for January 8.
