Rival Troops Build up in Somalia’s Capital As US, UK Warn Against Violence

Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Tensions are high in Somalia’s capital where a buildup of troops has begun after the president said he had suspended the Prime Minister over corruption probe and deployed presidential guards to seize his office amid warning from the United States and the United Kingdom against possible violence.

In a meeting held in Mogadishu, Habargidir clan leaders agreed with their military commanders to mobilize thousands of forces by pulling out troops on the front-lines against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region.

Opposition-aligned forces have begun military maneuvers in Hodan, Abdiasis and other districts amid reports indicating that they are planning to close all main roads leading to president Farmajo’s residence. Armored vehicles could be seen at the gates of the presidential palace and pro-Farmajo troops have deployed in large numbers.

In a statement issued by its embassy in Mogadishu, the United States urged Somalia’s leaders “to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions in Mogadishu, refrain from provocative actions, and avoid violence”.

The United Kingdom said violence is “unacceptable” and urged the Horn of Africa country’s disputing sides to ease tensions.
