MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Mobile phone robbery involving the bodyguards of Somalia’s former deputy spy chief Abdullahi Kulane, who is now running for parliament in an election scheduled for this week, turned into a gun battle in the town of Dhusamareb on Saturday night, police said.
Abdullahi Kulane had been earlier accused of co-plotting the disappearance of female spy Ikran Tahlil whose family filed a case against him and his boss Fahad Yasin at the military court and urged it to issue arrest warrants for him and other suspects.
His bodyguards robbed unarmed soldiers loyal to key Farmajo critic Abdirahman Abdishakur of mobile phones, triggering tensions that later ended in a heavy gunfire exchange in the central town of Dhusamareb.
A local police said on Sunday that all soldiers involved in the incident were in custody and warned against similar shootouts in the town, which is hosting elections for a number of parliamentary seats.
