Several African leaders to arrive in Somalia’s capital

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Several African heads of state are expected to arrive in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu as security forces close main roads to further tighten security, Caasimada Online news website reported on Sunday.

The leaders of a number of African countries contributing troops to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia are set to visit the capital Mogadishu where they will hold talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Motive behind the trips has yet to be disclosed.

It comes amid increasing concerns about the failure of AU peacekeepers to dislodge militants from large swathes of territory in the southern regions of Somalia. Somali politicians often accuse the peacekeepers of refusing to take part in offensive operations against insurgents.

ATMIS peacekeepers are scheduled to withdraw from Somalia by the end of 2024. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has recently urged the AU to delay the withdrawal of about 1,000 peacekeepers in 2023.
