Somali airport official convicted of smuggling bomb into plane dies in prison

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Former head of security for Mogadishu Airport Abdiweli Mohamed Mo’ow, who had been convicted of smuggling a bomb that blew a hole in the fuselage of a Daallo Airlines plane in 2016, died in a prison in Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday.

Mo’ow who had been serving a life sentence died shortly after was admitted to a hospital for undisclosed complications, about 6 years following his implication in the airline explosion.

A suspected suicide bomber who had detonated an explosive device inside the plane was meant to be on a Turkish Airlines flight, Daallo chief executive later said after the incident that force the plane to make an emergency landing at Mogadishu Airport, from where it had taken off.
