MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur on Tuesday opened a conference with officials from neighboring countries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti ahead of planned offensive against Al-Shabaab, Caasimada Online news website reported.
The officials will discuss plans on an upcoming joint offensive aimed at retaking vast swathes of territory in south Somalia, which is under the control of Islamist militants.
It came weeks after the leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya agreed to launch joint operations against the Al-Qaeda affiliate following the end of the first phase of an offensive started by Somali troops with the support of US and Turkish drones.
