MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Tuesday there is no turning back in the fight against the Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab following recent military setbacks.
Speaking at the opening of the second parliament session, Mohamud added that insecurity and drought are grim challenges facing his government and called for parliament cooperation.
“Our country and people are at crossroads where there is no turning back, where failure has no place. We decided to buckle down for the fight to cleanse the country of Kharawij (Al-Shabaab),” Somali president told parliament.
“I have found no alternative way other than defending our dignity, Islam and nationhood.”
The remarks have come days after government troops withdrew from areas they captured during a recent offensive against militants.
