MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud urged parliament leadership and permanent committees to halt a motion on the country’s worsening security, a week after armed militants attacked a hotel inside the security perimeter of the presidential palace.

In a meeting on Sunday night, the president raised concern about the motion, which is feared to pave the way for a possible no-confidence vote against the current government. More than 50 MPs voted in favor of the motion on Saturday, who asked the speaker to summon security officials for questioning as security in Mogadishu’s green-zone deteriorates.

MPs said their lives were at risk due to frequent stops by government troops for security checks, adding that in some cases, they were ordered to walk through checkpoints without their bodyguards.

Somali President called on the parliament to approve important laws submitted by the cabinet and to play a pivotal role in the ongoing fight against Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab.
