MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced on Thursday that Somalia and Egypt had reached an agreement to convene a second tripartite meeting with Eritrea, aimed at further strengthening cooperation among the three nations, following a meeting with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The remarks, made during a joint press conference with President Mohamud, came shortly after the two leaders’ discussions in Cairo, which followed an invitation from President el-Sisi for talks focused on addressing Egypt’s concerns over a recent agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia to fully restore diplomatic relations.
“We also agreed that the Asmara Summit, held among Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea on October 10, 2024, contributed to the significant progress in relations and coordination among our countries,” el-Sisi stated.
“Discussions witnessed ways to enhance coordination on regional issues, within the framework of keenness to support Somalia, as a fundamental pillar for the Horn of Africa’s stability. We agreed on the importance of holding a second tripartite summit to fortify this partnership.”
President el-Sisi further confirmed that Egyptian forces would participate in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), a peacekeeping mission launched earlier this year. He underscored that the deployment would not pose a security threat to any nation, despite assertions from Ethiopia suggesting otherwise.
The two nations also signed a series of agreements and memoranda of understanding, prominently elevating their bilateral relationship to the status of a strategic partnership, though the specifics of most of the accords remain undisclosed.
