Somalia arrests 100 traders for VAT evasion, says minister

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Finance Abdiqafar Hange announced that the government has detained 100 traders for evading VAT on mobile money transactions. This development comes a day after a prominent MP revealed the arrest of four hospital directors over similar issues.

“More than 100 people attempting to circumvent tax obligations by using personal numbers instead of merchant numbers have been apprehended and brought to government headquarters,” he told Universal Somali TV.

“Traders are required to conduct sales using Merchant numbers; however, cash transactions are also permissible.”
