MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The commander of Somalia’s Custodial Corps Mahad Abdirahman, speaking at a ceremony marking the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of the force, said on Tuesday that Al-Shabaab had increased attacks capitalizing on more government attention diverted to politics and ongoing elections.
“It appears that when attention was diverted to politics and elections, they turned their attention on us and it seems that they have increased their work,” the commander of Somali Custodial Corps said, speaking to hundreds of soldiers during a ceremony held under a tight security.
His remarks follow multiple bomb and gun attacks in Mogadishu and other cities. Last week, insurgents launched an overnight attack razing to the ground a police station in the capital and seizing police vehicles.
Mahad urged his troops to be prepared for defending themselves from potential assaults by insurgents and to pay more attention to the fight against Islamist militants.
