MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said on Tuesday that Somalia has the right to invite Egyptian forces to assist in its security needs. This statement comes in response to warnings from Ethiopia, which cautioned both Somalia and Egypt against any actions that could be perceived as invasion. Barre’s comments underscore his government’s stance that such military support does not equate to an intention of aggression toward Ethiopia.
The Prime Minister’s remarks were part of his most extensive speech to date addressing the ongoing tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, which have persisted for the past nine months. Barre used the opportunity to deliver a sharp critique of Addis Ababa, accusing the Ethiopian government of violating Somali sovereignty. He condemned Ethiopia’s recent memorandum of understanding with the self-proclaimed state of Somaliland, arguing that such actions breach international law and undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Barre’s speech highlighted the Somali government’s position that any external military assistance, including potential deployments by Egyptian forces, is purely for defensive purposes and should not be misconstrued as a precursor to offensive operations. His comments aimed to clarify Somalia’s stance amidst escalating regional tensions and to counter any misconceptions about its intentions.
In addition to his criticism of Ethiopia, Barre emphasized the importance of national unity in Somalia. He assured that there is no internal discord regarding the defense of the country and stressed that all Somalis are united in their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. The Prime Minister called for a collective effort to address the current challenges without falling into divisions that could weaken the country’s position.
Barre’s speech also served as a call to action for Somalis to avoid any actions that might exacerbate existing local tensions or create further rifts. He urged citizens to stay focused on national interests and work together to prevent any internal conflicts that could be exploited by external actors. The emphasis was on maintaining a united front to strengthen Somalia’s resolve and resilience.
