Somalia-Kenya leaders discuss securing funds for post-ATMIS mission

Somalia-Kenya

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Kenyan President William Ruto engaged in crucial talks on the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), wrapping up Mohamud’s week-long tour of nations contributing troops to the mission focused on restoring stability in Somalia.

The Kenyan leader, whose troops are deployed in Somalia to combat the militant group Al-Shabaab, urged the Somali president to secure sustainable funding for the new peacekeeping mission from the international community, following financial constraints that plagued the outgoing mission and hindered its effectiveness.

This week, the Somali president conducted a diplomatic tour of troop-contributing nations to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), engaging with Kenya, Djibouti, Burundi, and Uganda while omitting Ethiopia due to rising tensions, as he sought support for the inclusion of Egyptian forces in the new mission and pushed for the exclusion of Ethiopia, which is lobbying to retain its troops in Somalia.
