Somalia: Mortar shells hit Mogadishu green zone amid escalating security fears

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Mortar shells struck several districts within Mogadishu’s heavily fortified Green Zone early Saturday, killing at least one civilian and injuring several others, in a fresh challenge to the Somali government’s security apparatus.

The barrage hit the central districts of Hamarweyne, Hamarjajab and Shibis — areas that host key government institutions, including Villa Somalia (the presidential palace), the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) headquarters, parliament, the police command, and the Mogadishu municipality.

The intended target of the attack remains unclear, and no group has yet claimed responsibility.

The incident comes weeks after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud issued a stern ultimatum to his top security officials, warning them to either halt the wave of mortar attacks on the capital or face dismissal and possible arrest.

In recent weeks, a series of mortar strikes have targeted Villa Somalia and the Halane compound — a secure zone near Mogadishu’s international airport housing foreign diplomatic missions — escalating public concern and prompting a sharp rebuke from the presidency over lapses in national security.
