MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble met on Friday the new President of the United Arab Emirates Mohamed bin Zayed, a day after Somali authorities released $9.6 million seized from the UAE at Mogadishu airport in 2018.
Roble departed for UAE visit on Thursday when his office said he would offer his government’s condolences to the Emirati authorities over the death of their ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed. He would also deliver a message of congratulations and greetings from the new President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the new ruler of the Gulf Arab nation Mohamed bin Zayed.
“I had the honor to meet … President of the sisterly United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi to offer condolences on the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed,” Roble’s office tweeted. He added that he had also a delivered a message of condolences and congratulations from new Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
On Thursday, Somali authorities released $9.6 million seized from the UAE by security personnel at Mogadishu airport in 2018, in an effort to further strengthen strained bilateral relations between the countries. read more
In return for the move, Abu Dhabi said it had donated about $9.5 million to Somalia’s drought relief efforts as the Horn of Africa country grapples with the worst food and water shortages in more than a decade. read more
