MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Sunday announced a limited cabinet reshuffle, reassigning three senior ministers in a move that underscores growing political turbulence within his administration.
In a statement issued by his office, Barre appointed Ahmed Moalim Fiqi as the new Minister of Defence, shifting him from his previous role as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Fiqi replaces Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, who had held the post for only a few weeks. Abdi will now serve as Second Deputy Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Abdisalam Dhaay has been named the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The reshuffle, which had been widely anticipated for weeks, has intensified scrutiny over the Prime Minister’s leadership and his government’s reliance on political recycling. Critics argue the changes merely rotate long-serving insiders rather than introducing fresh faces capable of addressing Somalia’s entrenched challenges, including insecurity, economic stagnation, and institutional fragility.
Analysts say the reshuffle reflects the administration’s deepening political uncertainty and an apparent lack of confidence in its ability to bring in effective new leadership.
