MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Pressure is mounting on the leader of Somalia’s northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland Saeed Abdullahi Deni after the last opposition parties called for the cancelation of scheduled one-man one-vote election.
Ifiye and Sinad, opposition parties earlier thought to have ties with Deni, have now broken ranks ranks with the regional leader, demanding the conduct of timely vote in which MPs choose the new regional president.
“It is not possible to hold a popular vote in which people elect new president and deputy president during this transition period,” the parties said in a statement.
“The election should be in a parliamentary manner where selected MPs choose president and his deputy,” they added.
It comes weeks after an alliance of opposition politicians threatened to oust Deni if he continues insisting on the conduct of a popular vote and condemned regional parliament for making controversial amendments to the constitution.
