MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United Nations Security Council has said Somalia should discuss its request on the pause of the scheduled drawdown of ATMIS peacekeepers with the African Union.
“[The council] would ask the Government of Somalia to discuss this request with the African Union in the first instance and revert to the Security Council with an agreed proposal,” the UN Security Council said.
It came days after Somalia’s government, in a letter addressed to council, urged a 3-month suspension of the withdrawal of about 3,000 peacekeepers scheduled for the end of September, angering the African Union which oversees the peacekeeping mission in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation.
