Somalia, UN hold talks on transition of ‘UNSOM to country office’

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that technical teams from the federal government and the United Nations held their first meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday to discuss the transition of UN political mission in the country.   

“Technical teams representing the Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations convened their first meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday, June 22nd, to deliberate on the planned transition of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) to a UN Country Office,” Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on X. 

“Technical teams have initiated talks to strategize a smooth transition from a UN special political mission to a United Nations country team structure, signaling a pivotal phase in Somalia’s development trajectory.” 

The Ministry stressed that discussions are expected to continue for weeks with the intention of creating a “clear timeline for gradual and orderly transition” that reflects the country’s progress towards self-reliance.
