MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Interior Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who has long been conveying rhetoric against controversial port deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, took up a new role as the country’s foreign minister amid escalating tensions between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa.
In a cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed three other ministers to posts, including the ministries of interior and internal security.
The appointment of Ahmed Moalim Fiqi is feared to exacerbate tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, just days after Mogadishu gave the Ethiopian ambassador 72 hours to leave the country and ordered the closure of Ethiopian consulates in Hargeisa and Garowe.
“His appointment indicates Villa Somalia intends to play hardball with Somaliland, Ethiopia,” regional political and security analyst Rashid Abdi said on X.
