MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Minister of Defense Hassan Hussein Haji has attended a meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, which focused on efforts aimed at ensuring that Somali government troops shoulder responsibility for the security of the Horn of Africa nation before AMISOM exit, Dalsan Radio reported on Wednesday.

The meeting held via Zoom had also in attendance of the head of African Union mission in Somalia Francisco Madeira.

Somali Defense Minister discussed how his government’s troops could take a leading role in the fight against Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab and take over security responsibility before the withdrawal of the African Union peacekeepers.

It comes after Somali government has rejected proposed AU-UN joint mission as the mandate of AMISOM peacekeepers expires.
