Somalia’s Disputed Electoral Board Launches Blistering Attack on Former President

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s disputed electoral commission has launched a blistering attack on former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as deadlock over the composition of the board has delayed the country’s elections.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the commission said former Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was running for a second term in a bid to “loot public property”.

It accused the former president of breaking the law during his tenure before the incumbent leader Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo assumed office in early 2017.

Former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has not immediately commented on the allegation.

The commission has later removed the content of the statement from its Facebook page but did not give apology over the stinging attack on former president.

Somalia’s government announced on Saturday the country would head to the polls and the electoral commission, which has launched the stinging attack on former president who is one of the candidates running against the incumbent leader, will be managing the electoral process despite warnings by the opposition that they would boycott the elections.

Opposition leaders had earlier accused the federal government of stacking the electoral board with loyalists of the incumbent president and called for its dissolution but the government insisted on keeping it.
