MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is set to travel to the town of Garowe on Thursday amid plans to form an alliance with Puntland regional President Saeed Abdullahi Deni to jointly challenge an ongoing review into the constitution, Caasimada Online news website reported on Wednesday.
Preparations for efforts to welcome Farmajo are currently underway in Garowe town. It will be his first visit to the town since he was defeated in 2022 presidential vote.
Deni is still at odds with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposed proposed constitutional changes by Villa Somalia. Farmajo had previously failed attempts to form an alliance with key opposition figures, including Abdirahman Abdishakur and his former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.
It is not yet known whether Deni, who had previously supported Farmajo’s opposition during deadlock over elections between 2021 and 2022, will accept to rally behind the former federal president in his opposition against Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government.
