MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdisaeed Muse Ali said on Thursday he had survived an assassination attempt after Puntland regional troops attacked him in the central town of Galkayo.
In a statement on Twitter, the Minister said he was attending an Iftar hosted by a well-known traditional leader with his family when they came under fire from regional forces.
“Towards the end of our dinner, under the orders of Mudug Police Commander Mumin, technical vehicles mounted with DShK weapons were deployed to attack us. We were under sustained and heavy fire power from Mumin’s soldiers for about 15 minutes,” Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs said.
“Our security team foiled the politically motivated assassination attempt. Unfortunately, one soldier has been killed… with another dead. [The traditional leader] has also been seriously wounded and is currently in hospital.”
Mumin Abdi Shire, commander of Puntland police in Mudug region dismissed claims by the Minister that he had ordered the attack and said there was an exchange of gunfire between troops within regional forces.
