Somalia’s Government Denies Diverting Donor Funds Meant for Flood Mitigation

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s federal government has denied that it diverted funds allocated by donor nations for flood mitigation following allegations by the Hirshabelle regional state authorities.

In a statement, the Ministry of Finance said there were no funds intended to be used for flood mitigation suspended by the government and stressed that the projects continue as planned.

The ministry urged the Hirshabelle Flood Mitigation Committee to respond to the allegation and provide evidence showing the achievements made thus far in preventing floods.

Over the past weeks, many roads linking major cities and villages in Hirshabelle region have been submerged by flood waters, forcing tens of thousands of families to flee their homes.

Authorities of the regional state have recently accused the Ministry of Finance of suspending funds earmarked by the donor nations for efforts aimed at preventing floods in the region.
