MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Information, Abdirahman Yusuf Al Adala, announced that the government has successfully halted Al-Shabaab’s tax collection at the Mogadishu airport and seaport. This development follows President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s declaration of an all-out offensive against the militant group, including efforts to disrupt its revenue streams.
“We have shut down Al-Shabaab’s revenue sources at both the airport and seaport in Mogadishu, and there are no additional ports and airports from which they can collect taxes,” Al-Adala said.
Al Adala highlighted that this achievement marks a significant shift in the situation since the government’s intensified campaign began two years ago. He urged Somalis to support the government’s efforts to combat Al-Shabaab.
Despite these successes, security analysts note that Al-Shabaab remains financially stable. The group managed to withstand and reverse some of the gains of the government’s offensive, which began in mid-2022.
