MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Interior Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said Puntland’s rejection of an agreement on elections signed on May 27 by the members of the National Consultative Council will not obstruct its implementation, Caasimada Online news website reported on Tuesday.

“Four regional states and Banadir united in this election, we hope that Puntland will join it in the future,” Fiqi said.

The leaders of the federal government and four regional states, including Hirshabelle, Jubaland and Southwest agreed on amendments to the constitution, including the extension of presidential term to 5 years, the formation of only two national political parties and abolishment of the premiership system.

Opposition leaders, including former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo have joined Puntland in opposing the agreement, calling for a broad-based consensus on the controversial issues.
