Somalia’s Jubaland president allowed to run for third successive term

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The parliament of southern Somalia’s Jubaland state on Tuesday approved changes in the constitution that would allow regional President Ahmed Madobe to run for a third successive term.

Madobe, who has been in office since 2011 and outlasted three federal presidents, is currently enjoying the support of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh after agreeing to controversial changes in the federal constitution.

Regional assembly also voted to extend the presidential mandate from four to five years, months after Somali parliament had given President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud a similar extension despite strong opposition from other political stakeholders, including Puntland state.

The move undermines President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s promise that the country will hold a one-man one-vote election and also weakens his popularity ahead of the scheduled exit of African Union peacekeepers.
