Somalia’s new administration confirms deaths of soldiers in Eritrea

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A number of soldiers died in Eritrea during a military training, Somalia’s presidential spokesman Abdikarin Ali Kar has said following protests staged by parents of missing sons.

In an interview with Somali Cable TV, Kar said parents of the recruits had been informed about their death and those who are still searching for their loved ones will receive an explanation. He did not give further details about the incidents that led to the deaths.

Last year, Somali media outlets reported that some of the missing recruits had been electrocuted while others had been drowned in Eritrean training camps. Clashes between Eritrean soldiers and Somali recruits were also reported.

The new administration of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud denied rumors that the missing soldiers are held in Eritrea for $50 million ransom and promised to return them home immediately.
