MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held his first meeting on Tuesday with the outgoing leader Mohamed Abdullahi since his resounding victory in a vote held behind blast walls at airport hanger in Mogadishu on Sunday.
The meeting took place at the presidential palace and both sides discussed issues, including an upcoming power handover ceremony which is expected to be held next week.
On Sunday, Farmajo conceded defeat and congratulated Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on win, and said he would show solidarity with the president-elect to be able to perform his duty. read more
Foreign governments, including those of the US, UAE, UK, Ethiopia and Djibouti congratulated Mohamud on his victory. He is the first former president to win re-election for a second term since Somalia gained its independence in 1960.
