MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed thanks to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday for a donation of about $9.5 million meant to support Somali government to tackle the worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa country in more than a decade.
“His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohmoud expressed his thanks and gratitude to his brother, his Highness … President of the sisterly state of the United Arab Emirates for his genorosity to the people of Somalia regarding the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid worth 35 million dirhams to those affected by drought in the country,” his office said. “His Excellency commended the UAE for standing by the Somali people.”
It followed a decision by Somali government to release $9.6 million seized from the UAE at Mogadishu airport in 2018, in what some of the country’s political stakeholders said lied behind rivalries between Gulf Arab nations at the time. Somalia’s outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, popularly known as Farmajo, sided with Qatar in a dispute with other Arab countries. read more
