Somalia’s opposition leaders agree on challenging ongoing constitutional overhaul

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – In a meeting held in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, the leaders of Somalia’s opposition agreed to boost efforts aimed at challenging an ongoing overhaul of the constitution spearheaded by the incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Caasimada Online news website reported on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by opposition figures, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, ex-Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, Abdirahman Abdishakur, Abdinasir Abdulle and Abdulkadir Osoble Ali.

Ex-President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed briefed other opposition leaders about his recent meeting with Mohamud, which failed to produce any results. He said the formation of a coalition government, cooperation on the fight against Al-Shabaab, unified approach against Ethiopian aggression and stopping ongoing amendments in the constitution were among the issues he had proposed, though all were rejected by the incumbent President.

It is the first time Somali opposition leaders meet abroad since Mohamud was re-elected to office in 2022. However, Kenya’s capital was crucial for opposition figures to organize themselves and win elections held in Somalia in 2022 and 2017.
