MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s opposition MPs on Monday rejected plans by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to overhaul the constitution and announced a new alliance, Caasimada Online news website reported.

Speaking on behalf of the MPs who formed the alliance, Khalif Abdi Omar told a press conference in the capital Mogadishu that they will not endorse attempts to make controversial changes to the constitution, in what opposition says is aimed at returning the country to a dictatorial era.

“This alliance expresses concern about the terms of the agreement signed by the National Consultative Council which was not inclusive. Some of the terms were contrary to the constitution and broad-based agreements between Somalis,” the MP said.
