Somalia’s parliament to approve controversial changes to constitution

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ordered the leaders of the two chambers of the parliament to approve controversial changes to the constitution in a session set to be held on Saturday, opposition MP Abdirahman Abdishakur said on Wednesday.

If ratified, Somalia’s parliament will lose its right to elect President for the first time in decades and the position of the Prime Minister will be abolished, in a move aimed at giving the president unlimited and absolute powers.

Mohamud wants to stay beyond his term if authorities fail to hold a universal suffrage which is currently impossible, Abdishakur added.
