Somalia’s PM Convenes National Consultative Council Meeting in Blow to President

Somali PM

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble on Monday convened a meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC) in blow to the President, a week after he alleged that Farmajo had orchestrated an attempted coup to prevent the summit from taking place.

The presidents of Puntland, Hirshabelle, Southwest, Jubaland and Galmudug, and the governor of Banadir region are attending the meeting expected to address concerns raised over the transparency of ongoing parliamentary polls.

A parallel consultative meeting called by the President last week, in which he said a new Premier would be chosen, has not yet taken place. Southwest President Abdiasis Laftagaren, the only regional leader who said he would attend the summit and boycotted the NCC is now participating in the conference convened by the Roble following international pressure. read more

Several donor nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Sweden have supported the Prime Minister’s efforts to hold the meeting to ensure that the long-delayed polls are completed quickly.

Among key issues the leaders are expected to raise at the meeting are cooperation on the security of elections, revising electoral procedures to stop vote-rigging and manipulation activities and issuing a fixed timeline to prevent further delays in the elections.
