Somalia’s PM says govt will recruit 40k more police officers before ATMIS exit

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said his government is planning to recruit 40,000 new police officers to take responsibility for the security of the war-torn Horn of Africa nation after the scheduled exit of African Union peacekeepers by the end of 2024.

Barre speaking at an event in the capital Mogadishu stated that half of the 40,000 police officers will be recruited by the federal government and the rest will be “prepared” by the regional states.

It came just a few months after Mogadishu requested a three-month suspension of the drawdown of 3,000 peacekeepers scheduled for the end of September.
