MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia has been hit worst drought since 2011 that has affected 6.9 million people and 9.5 million livestock, Somali Premier Mohamed Hussein Roble said on Monday during a meeting with international partners.
Roble warned of the risk of famine if the situation continues to deteriorate, saying that the number of deaths from hunger and thirst has risen over the past weeks amid a state of humanitarian emergency in place in the Horn of Africa country.
“If the situation continues to worsen in this way, it is certain that it could unleash famine which would claim lives of many Somalis,” Somalia’s Prime Minister said.
“I urge mobilization and quick relief campaign, now. Any delay to the aid our people need may cause deaths of many people who can be saved today.”
In his speech, Roble also stressed that an additional 2.6 million people live without water and more than 500,000 others fled their homes to due to drought and water shortages. It follows a state of humanitarian emergency he had declared in November last year. read more
