Somalia’s police arrest prominent journalist, drawing condemnation

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s police on Monday arrested a prominent local journalist Ali Nur Salad, drawing condemnation from opposition and activists, hours after he had accused government officials of making money from Khat drug that continues to impede the progress of the Somali armed forces.

In a Facebook post, police said Salad was arrested due to his “lack of ethics, fabrication and bad mouthing the national armed forces”, but the Somali law enforcement has yet to provide evidence supporting its allegation.

Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, ex-mayor of Mogadishu Thabit Abdi and media activists condemned the detention, saying that the move is aimed at stifling press freedom and called for Salad’s immediate release.
