Somalia’s police shoot dead three civilians in Mogadishu, spark protest

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s security forces shot dead three people in the capital Mogadishu on Saturday, sparking a protest by tuktuk drivers complaining about police killings of civilians, Universal TV reported.

Police killed a tuktuk driver in the city’s Howlwadag district triggering a protest by drivers burning tires and blocking traffic in a main street in the heart of the city.

Protesters said they pay compulsory $15 dollar road tax every month and face killings by security forces, urging authorities to deal with increasing crimes by government troops.

Two protesters were killed after troops opened fire to disperse demonstrators. A number of other people were arrested.
