Somalia’s Police Torture and Detain 4 Journalists After Militant Attack – Media Watchdog

Somalia’s Police Detain Several Journalists Covering Al-Shabaab Bomb and Gun Attack

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s police tortured and detained four journalists covering the aftermath of an overnight Al-Shabaab attack that had razed to the ground a police station in the capital Mogadishu, a local media watchdog said on Wednesday.

Photos circulated on social media showed the journalists blind-folded and forced to lie on the ground with their hands and legs tied on the backs under the sweltering heat of the sun. No government official has yet commented on the incident.

The reporters detained by police are Ismael Muse, Mohamed Hassan, Aweys Mohamud and Mohamud Bari who are with several television stations based in the capital, according to Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS).

SJS said it was “concerned about the journalists’ safety as they’re held at unknown location”.
