Somalia’s president appoints daughter as foreign affairs advisor

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed his daughter Jihan as his advisor on foreign affairs and international cooperation, in a controversial move that has triggered a social media backlash.

In a letter dated March 4, Mohamud said his daughter has the right “education” and “experience” to hold the post, after she had been spotted accompanying the president in several overseas trips, including one to the United States.

The President, whose previous term was tainted by corruption and theft of public wealth, is promoting members of his family by awarding them lucrative contracts and picking them for important portfolios.
