Somalia’s president arrives in Uganda for crucial talks

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Uganda’s capital on Saturday for high-level talks with President Yoweri Museveni, aiming to secure additional military support to intensify operations against Al-Shabaab militants, his office said.

The visit follows Mohamud’s recent diplomatic efforts in Turkey and Djibouti, where he sought reinforcements to counter the jihadist group’s advances in Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle, key regions bordering the capital, Mogadishu.

Uganda, a major troop contributor to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia (ATMIS), is expected to be pressed for further deployments. While Mogadishu has allocated Uganda the largest contingent in the revamped AU force, it remains unclear whether Kampala will commit additional resources.

Meanwhile, Turkey has reportedly agreed to supply hundreds of private military contractors from the Sadat firm to bolster Somali forces in securing Mogadishu and repelling militant encroachments in Middle Shabelle. The contractors will also protect a planned Turkish missile testing facility near the capital’s coastline.
