MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is considering a government shakeup in the wake of deadly Al-Shabaab attack on an upscale hotel inside the security perimeters of the presidential complex, local media reported.
On Thursday evening, five Al-Shabaab gunmen stormed SYL hotel after blasting their way into the compound, which is located a stone’s throw from the president’s residence, triggering a gun battle with security forces that lasted for more than 15 hours. At least 31 people were killed and more than 46 others wounded, according to Somali journalist Abdalla Mumin.
The attack raised suspicion about how Al-Shabaab gunmen were able pass through dozens of security checkpoints and reach the heavily fortified green zone, where only government officials with IDs can gain its access.
In response to the attack, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the headquarters of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and demanded an explanation, ordering a thorough investigation into the incident.
Mohamud and his Prime Minister are also planning a government shakeup in which a number of ministers and security officials are expected to be dismissed. The duo want to expand their power base despite strong opposition against their proposed changes to the constitution and Al-Shabaab counter-offensive that has put government troops on the back foot and forced to desert a number of towns captured during two years of costly military operations.
