MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is considering sacking the mayor of Mogadishu Omar Filish who was appointed by his predecessor Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo amid worsening insecurity in the city, Caasimada Online news website reported on Tuesday.
Omar Filish was a staunch ally of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and is known for his repeated remarks stoking violence against opposition leaders, including the incumbent President last year.
A number of politicians, including former mayors of the capital have applied for the job, though the President has yet to decide on the matter.
The President is also expected to shake up key security agencies, including the police whose leadership was allied with the former the administration of President Farmajo and ordered attacks on opposition leaders and supporters last year.
