Somalia’s president convenes meeting with army top brass

Somalia president, army top brass

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday convened a meeting with army top brass at the Ministry of Defense, hours after Somali security forces backed by US air support seized a strategic village near the port town of Kismayo.

Military officials briefed the President about recent army operations in the Lower Juba region that saw the capture of two villages linking the coastal town of Kismayo and Afmadow, both under the control of allied Somali and Kenyan forces, Mohamud’s office said in a statement on X.

The military operation, which comes amid stalled offensive in central Somalia, has for the first time in a decade lifted a siege on the town of Afmadow in Jubaland state.
