Somalia’s president leads NCC meeting after Jubaland leader’s exit from election talks

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the National Consultative Council in Mogadishu, following the withdrawal of Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe, who became the second regional leader to exit the council.

Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe walked out of a week-long council meeting on Monday after talks on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s proposal for a one-year extension of state leaders’ terms, followed by unified federal member state elections in 2025, stalled. Madobe insisted that he would hold a unilateral vote in Kismayo without delay.

He joined Puntland President Saeed Abdullahi Deni, who had already withdrawn from the meeting, as his government accuses the Somali president of violating the constitution and steering the country off course.

It remains uncertain how the meeting can proceed without the involvement of two of Somalia’s most influential regional leaders and whether the remaining participants will agree to a pact not supported by them.
