ANKARA (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met on Wednesday his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, days after arriving in Ankara for an official state visit.
The two presidents would “lead high-level bilateral discussions on regional and global issues of mutual interest”, Somali President’s office said.
Speaking at Seta think-tank in Ankara on Tuesday, Mohamud elaborated on the benefits of diplomatic relations and cooperation between Somalia and Turkey. In his speech, he said his administration was currently not “in a position” to negotiate with Al-Shabaab, but would begin overtures at the right time. read more
Turkey is a key partner of Somalia and trains Somali special forces. It also provides budget support to the Somali federal government.
On Tuesday, Somali President visited a military facility in Isparta where dozens of Gorgor Somali special forces were receiving an advanced commando training.
