Somalia’s president rebuffs request from ex-leader Sharif to form coalition government

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud rejected a proposal from former leader Sharif Sheikh Ahmed to form a new coalition government, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.

It came hours after Sharif said in a statement that talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the current situation in the country, changes in the constitution and the fight against Al-Shabaab had collapsed.

The duo met in Kenya’s capital Nairobi this week at the request of Mudulood clan leaders to settle their differences. However, Sharif proposed the formation of a coalition government which will host members of his party and called for a pause to the ongoing overhaul of the constitution.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud turned down both requests, leading to the abysmal failure of the meeting spearheaded by the leaders of his clan. He insisted that he could only deal with Sharif’s personal grievances and that the agenda of the talks should only focus on personal matters.
